Hazardous Areas - Zone Definitions
ZONE
ZERO

An area where an explosive atmosphere is continually present or present for long periods - eg. inside liquid fuel storage tanks.

ZONE
ONE

An area where an explosive atmosphere will be present in normal operation but not continually - eg. re-fuelling areas.

ZONE
TWO

An area where an explosive atmosphere is not likely to occur in normal operation and if it does occur it will exist only for a short time - eg. solvent storage areas.  The solvent is normally contained in sealed drums however, if a drum is damaged during the process of moving it then a potentially explosive atmosphere could exist for a short period.


CE EX II 3/2/1 GD Ex/EEx N/nL/ia/ib IIC T_
CE Means CE mark permitted by the European Comitte for the Electromechanical Standarization
II Means Group II Equipment = Not for the use in mines
Ex Inside the Hexagon means "Protection against the Explosions"
3/2/1 Means ATEX Category 1/2/3 = Old Zone II (Danger in normal conditions, less than 10 hours/year)
GD G means Gases/Vapours. D means dusts.
Ex/EEx Equipment tested for dangerous areas by the Explosion Protection Norm/by latest Explosion Protection Standard EN50021
N Non Incendive, Equip. not able to ignite a flamable gas in normal conditions, failures difficult to occur
nL Energy Limitation, the equipment has limited energy of sparks and temperature.
ia Instrinsically safe, limit energy of sparks and temperature (Category 1)
ib Instrinsically safe, limit energy of sparks and temperature (Category 2)
IIC Equipment belonging to a group tested for Hydrogen and Acetylene
T (1,2,3,4,5,6) is the equipment classification by its surface maximum temperature:
T1=450 C T2=300 C T3=200 C T4=135 C T5=100 C T6=85 C
